Large 19th Century Portuguese Terracotta Olive Jars

A near pair of large 19th century Portuguese terracotta olive jars with beautifully weathered surfaces and deep, rich patina.

Originally used for storing olives and oils, these vessels have developed a characterful finish over time, with tonal variation and natural markings that make each piece unique.  Some olive oil residue adding to the patina.

Their sculptural form and scale make them ideal as decorative statement pieces, whether styled indoors or in covered outdoor spaces.

In very good condition for its age and there are no cracks.  We are often asked if these will be ok outside in the frost.  They are over 100 years old so we cannot guarantee them but the terracotta is over 5 cm thick and these have often been outside in the mountains most of their lives.  We haven’t had any problems with this thus far.  These are checked for cracks.

Slightly darker in colour 80 cm h x 63 diameter.

Lighter in colour 75 cm h x 61 diameter.
