Large Italian Architectural Mirror with Original Painted Frame

A wonderful large Italian mirror, made using reclaimed antique architectural architrave with lovely original decorative paintwork. The frame has a beautiful warm ochre colour, with contrasting black and faded blue-grey detailing and plenty of wonderful aged patina.

Made by a friend of ours near Verona in northern Italy, who specialises in transforming old architectural elements into beautiful and unusual mirrors. The frame has a simple, almost neoclassical feel, with its broad mouldings, contrasting painted corner blocks and understated geometric decoration. We particularly like the layers of old paint that have worn away over time, revealing the timber and earlier finishes beneath. The mirror glass is new but has been specially aged to create a wonderfully foxed appearance, with little decorative brass flower-shaped fixings holding the individual sections together.

A lovely combination of old Italian architectural salvage and newly made mirror glass, with plenty of character and charm. The frame retains extensive historic wear, marks, scratches and areas of missing paint, all part of its appeal. It can be hung either portrait or landscape.
