1987 French Oil Painting by Marc Miranda

A wonderfully colourful French oil on canvas by Marc Miranda, dating from 1987.

Born in Casablanca in 1948 and later based in the south of France, Miranda developed a distinctive style characterised by bold colour, simplified forms and strong contrasts of light and shade. He exhibited extensively in France as well as internationally, with exhibitions in Paris, Montpellier, Aix-en-Provence, Saint-Paul-de-Vence and the United States.

This painting depicts a group of figures gathered in a bright interior or terrace setting. The composition is particularly striking, with broad, confident areas of turquoise, soft green, pink, ochre, violet and red creating the impression of strong Mediterranean sunlight.

The work has a lovely painterly surface, with areas of thickly applied oil and visible brush and palette-knife work.

Signed Marc Miranda lower left and inscribed with the title and 87 to the reverse of the canvas.

The painting is accompanied by an original catalogue and invitation produced for Marc Miranda’s exhibition at Galerie de la Place, Tours, from 15 May to 30 June 1998. The catalogue includes biographical information about the artist, details of his previous exhibitions and illustrations of several of his works.

Presented in its original broad fabric-covered frame with gilt edging and an off-white inner frame. Some minor age-related wear to the frame, which we feel complements the painting well.
