Large Italian Architectural Mirror with Baroque Decoration

A wonderful large Italian mirror, made using reclaimed antique architectural architrave with beautiful Baroque-style floral and scrolling decoration. The original black and warm ochre paintwork has a lovely aged patina, with plenty of wear revealing the layers beneath.

Made by a friend of ours near Verona in northern Italy, who specialises in transforming old architectural elements into beautiful and unusual mirrors. The decorative frame has an almost theatrical quality, with its intricate foliate scrollwork and contrasting colours. The mirror glass is new but has been specially aged to create a wonderfully foxed appearance, reminiscent of old mercury glass. We particularly like the little brass flower-shaped fixings holding the individual sections of glass in place, a lovely detail that adds to its character.

A striking and rather unusual piece, combining the charm of old Italian architectural salvage with the practicality of a newly made mirror. The frame retains plenty of historic wear, marks and imperfections, all part of its appeal. It can be hung either portrait or landscape.
