19th Century Style Belgian Interior Painting Depicting the Rubenshuis, Antwerp
This atmospheric Belgian interior painting captures the warmth and romance of a historic Flemish room, believed to depict an interior inspired by the famous Rubenshuis in Antwerp — the former home and studio of the celebrated Baroque painter Peter Paul Rubens.
The painting is signed what appears to be “Geo. De Meyer”, believed to be a Belgian or Flemish artist working during the mid-20th century, with a strong focus on atmosphere, architectural interiors and the handling of natural light in the impressionistic tradition
Painted in an expressive, impressionistic manner, the composition focuses beautifully on shifting light pouring through leaded windows onto the dramatic chequerboard floor, richly textured walls and dark timber ceiling beams. The painting has a wonderful depth and mood to it, evoking the quiet grandeur of old Flemish interiors and museum houses.
The reverse still retains old handwritten dealer or gallery notes in Dutch referencing atmosphere, light and impressionistic colour palette, further supporting its Belgian or Flemish origin. One of the accompanying reference images shown was photographed inside the famous Plantin-Moretus Museum in Antwerp, helping illustrate the remarkable similarity in the historic embossed leather wall coverings, dramatic light and black-and-white chequerboard flooring seen within the painting itself.
A deeply decorative and characterful piece, equally suited to traditional interiors, library spaces, studies or layered contemporary rooms where warmth, history and texture are desired.
