1930’s French Oak Kitchen Island

A substantial 1930s French oak kitchen island with beautifully simple panelled detailing and a wonderfully warm aged oak to one side.  The reverse side we have created a fun contrast by painting the interior with a distressed harlequin design.

Its clean architectural form and generous proportions make it an ideal freestanding kitchen island, retail counter, studio piece or entertaining space. The panelled construction gives it a refined yet understated appearance, reminiscent of early 20th century French workshop and provincial furniture.

We particularly like the idea of introducing a subtle antique piece such as this centrally within a kitchen, surrounded by more contemporary cabinetry or softly painted country-style units. The contrast between the aged oak and newer painted finishes works beautifully, helping to add warmth, texture and character to a space without overpowering it.

For clients looking for a different finish to the work surface, the existing parquetry top could also be replaced with a marble worktop if preferred, giving a contrasting surface and the bility to add a overhang for stools - i have produced some images using Ai to give a sense of scale and to show what the marble top could look like.
